The 40 Reales celebrates the 8 Reales Silver Pillar Coin which was minted there by Spain from 1732 to 1772. The 8 Reales and its fractional parts served as the standard coinage for the American Colonies as well as being used for commerce throughout most of the civilized world. The 8 Reales was known as a "Piece of Eight" and was part of many pirate stories (fact and fiction.)
